A group of six oast houses. Two are in the traditional round form and four have square roofs. All have traditional Kent peg tile roofs. All have the traditional white cowls. Oast houses were used for drying hops by drawing air through layers of hops; effectively they are chimneys and the cowls, which rotate according to the wind direction maximise the draught. Oasts are a common sight in Kent although most have now been converted into dwelling houses. Sissinghurst, Kent, UK. August 2003.
